Director of Debates

The USU began its life as a debating society and we are today the most successful debating community in the world. Although the USU has changed and evolved over the past 140 years, debating remains important to our core constitutional objectives to foster the social, cultural and intellectual development of our members.The Director of Debates (DOD) supervises and organises the day-to-day running of the Debates Committee.

Student Editors

If you have an interest in the field of writing, journalism and/or communications, these roles provide training and mentoring which ensures you gain skills that are both practical and enjoyable.
 
You will assist USU to produce professional-quality publications, meet regular deadlines and work with experienced staff.
 
Bull Magazine
The USU's four-per-Semester full-colour campus magazine.  Full of student-generated articles, features, reviews, giveaways as well as Clubs and Societies event details, committee meetings, access card specials and more.

Campus Culture Director

The USU manages a very comprehensive “outside the classroom” student experience.  The USU student experience and engagement programs are major cultural capital for both the USU and the University.  The Campus Culture Director’s role is to add further value to the cultural and intellectual lives of members of the university community.  The community values the atmosphere of The Verge Festival and Orientation Week; the Campus Culture Directors will be charged with generating that kind of mood all year round.

2013 Campus Culture Director Positions NOW OPEN
The USU is seeking two energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to develop, publicise and implement a schedule of events for students of the University to attend during Semesters 1 and 2 2013. The events will take place on Camperdown/Darlington Campus and involve Sydney College of the Arts (Rozelle) and The Conservatorium of Music.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop your event management skills. In this role you will work closely with the “cultural clubs” in the C&S Program to generate the events calendar and drive attendance at your events.

If you have ideas about ways to engage and involve all members of the University community in exciting and innovative events on campus, then this is your chance to put them into action.

Committee Members

USU Members are invited to nominate themselves for two Student Experience Committees in 2013 - the Clubs and Societies Committee and the Debates Committee.

Clubs & Societies Committee
C&S Committee members for 2013 will be appointed on the basis of an interview. To nominate you must be a USU member. Interviews for committee positions will be held in the week commencing 3 September 2012.

The Clubs and Societies committee governs the C&S Program. The Committee considers new club applications, capital expenditure funding requests, constitutional changes and considers appeals against decisions made by the C&S office. Committee members provide feedback on the C&S Regulations, Training and resources for C&S Executives and may participate in the C&S Awards Panel.
 
Debates Committee
The Debates Committee governs USU's Debating program. Committee members review the Debates regulations and take responsibility for organising the debating program, through portfolios that committee members are elected to. The Debates Committee supports the work of the Director of Debates.
 
 
Debates Committee members for 2012 will be appointed on the basis of an interview. To nominate you must be a USU member. Interviews for committee positions will be held in the week commencing 3 September 2012.

Art Collection Officer

The University of Sydney owns an extensive collection of art. Since the early days of its history, the Union has been collecting works – by purchase, commission and bequest. Since the 1970’s the Union’s focus has been on the works of emerging artists and indigenous art. From 2008 the Collection has been managed by the University of Sydney Museums.

Each year two outstanding students are appointed to work with the University’s Senior Curator in the on-going management of the Union collection. The internships provide a tremendous chance for professional skills development for student wishing to pursue a career in art and gallery management. The Interns are provided with the opportunity of curating their own show in the Verge Gallery in October.

Student Program Coordinators

QUEER STUDENT PROGRAM COORDINATOR
The USU’s Queer program aims to bring to the University Community an awareness of queer issues whilst at the same time providing a safe and accepting environment in which all students feel comfortable and welcome.  The Queer Student Program Coordinators will broaden the reach of the queer program on campus by developing existing activities and initiating others.

The USU will appoint two (2) people to this role: 1 male-identifying Queer Convenor and 1 female-identifying Queer Convenor.

WOMEN'S STUDENT PROGRAM COORDINTORS
Women make up over 50% of the student population.  It is only relatively recently (1972) that the Men’s Union and the Women’s Union amalgamated.  The Women’s Students Program Coordinators position evolved from previous women’s programs at the Union and has as its aim the promotion of the rights of women, women’s safety, the abolition of harassment and ensuring that this university continues as a safe place for women.

The USU is governed by a Board of Student Directors elected by members of the USU. If you want to make a real difference to the way that USU is governed, you can run for a position on our Board of Directors.

O-Week Director

It’s not often you get the opportunity to be part of a festival with a budget of a quarter of a million dollars! The experience gained in dealing with everything from bumping hundreds of stalls onto the hallowed lawns of the University, dealing with security, choosing menus and negotiating with bands to make this a unique and memorable festival. Few people get the chance to leave Uni with this kind of experience under their belt.

Each year, the USU appoints 2 dynamic and creative individuals who are keen to help coordinate the USU’s largest annual festival. This is a great opportunity to develop skills in event management, leadership, community engagement and stakeholder relations.

Not only will you be given an honorarium for this role, you will also be supported, mentored and directed by professional event and project managers during the period you occupy this role.

Verge Festival Directors

The USU seeks talented and creative students to direct the largest Arts Festival on campus. Two positions are available for Directors plus Liaison Officers for the Conservatorium of Music and Sydney College of the Arts. All positions receive a cash honorarium.

Charity Officer

The USU recognises and encourages initiative, leadership and creativity within the student body and provides opportunities for exceptional students to develop their skills and to “give back” to the community.

The Student Coordinated Program aims to fulfil the USU Constitutional Objective to foster the social, cultural and intellectual well being of members and to enrich the University Community. The USU will appoint a Charity Officer to work with Programs Department staff to assist in promoting the cause of the USU’s nominated annual charitable organisation.

The Charity Officer will work with the USU’s nominated charity throughout the year, as well as working on charitable projects during the USU’s numerous festivals throughout the year including Humanitarian Week, Indigenous Week and Interfaith Week.

Postgraduate Students Internship
Internships aim to further support postgraduate students in the University Community. these positions recognise the specific set of issues facing the postgraduate student community. The interns will assist with development of programs addressing the engagement of postgraduate students.

Indigenous Festival Director

The USU is seeking two energetic, talented and creative people to develop an event week focused on Indigenous (Indigenous and non Indigenous) related issues. If you have ideas about ways to educate and involve all members of the university community about such issues, then this is your chance to put them into action.

Humanitarian Program Director

USU Humanitarian Week aims to make all members of the University community aware of Humanitarian issues and opportunities. Furthermore, Humanitarian Week aims to be a popular awareness raising event that is accessible to the broadest possible demographic. It should reach out to and educate all members of the USU community, especially those not previously involved in humanitarian or social justice issues.

The USU is seeking two energetic, talented and creative people to develop an events week focused on Humanitarian and Social Justice Issues. If you have ideas about ways to educate all members of the university community about humanitarian or social justice issues, then this is your chance to put them into action.

Interfaith Director

The USU is looks for two energetic, talented and creative people for this exciting position focused on Faith related issues.  If you have ideas about ways to educate all members of the university community about such issues, then this is your chance to put them into action.

Whilst the University of Sydney is a secular university, the USU has had a long rich involvement with religious and faith-based societies, some of which have histories longer than 80 years. The USU community contains 17 faith-based societies which comprise more than 1,000 students. There is also an extensive contingent of religious students not currently affiliated or members of the USU.

The Union’s faith-based activities are concentrated in three broad but related areas:

1. Clubs and societies activity
2. Interfaith week
3. The Interfaith Council

In 2011 Interfaith Week was launched so as to bring to the University Community an appreciation of the diversity of faith communities represented in the University population. Interfaith Week aims to be a popular awareness raising event that is accessible to the broadest possible demographic. It should reach out to and educate all members of the USU community, especially those not previously involved in issues of faith, religion or spirituality by bringing about a greater understanding of the role faith plays in the world.

In addition to Interfaith Week, the Interfaith Directors, from 2012, will assist with the ongoing administration of the newly created Interfaith Council. The council will be a formal meeting of the student leaders of the USU recognised (i.e. C&S Registered) University faith communities.
