A-grades for USU food outlets in Government Initiative - 10 November 2010

The University of Sydney Union (USU) has participated in a new state government initiative called ‘Scores on Doors’ which allows the public to view a scorecard which rates a food business’s compliance with food safety and hygiene requirements.

The initial audits were conducted on three of USU’s outlets and each outlet inspected achieved the highest possible ratings in the new ‘Scores on the Doors’ program.Cafe Tra Baci in Manning House, Courtyard Café in the Holme Building and Smart Eats in the Wentworth Building all came away with a top ‘A’ rating.

Similar schemes already exist in Los Angeles and Singapore, using the A, B, C and P grade pending scoring system to rank outlets. Scores on the Doors is another health and safety initiative being introduced by the NSW Food Authority, running in conjunction with the authority’s ‘Name and Shame’ website, which publicly outs eateries that fail to meet government food safety standards.

The USU has taken a proactive position to ensure food safety for the University community. The USU has developed a HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) Quality assessment program across all University of Sydney Union outlets, thereby introducing the highest standards in food safety, which has been reinforced by the top marks received in the Scores on the Doors program.

The USU’s Functions business The University of Sydney Venue Collection, meanwhile, holds gold license accreditation through the NSW Restaurant and Catering Association and is also HACCP accredited. The USU is now offering its accreditation programs and support to other on-campus catering tenants, with a view to ensuring all food served on campus meets the highest health and safety standards. The CEO of the USU, Paul McJannett said staff were very proud of their recent achievements and will proudly display the ‘A’ accreditations within the audited outlets.
