Manning Bar: Australian home of US Election - 6 November 2008

Hundreds packed into the USU's Manning Bar on 5 November 2008, to witness the historic election of Barack Obama to the United States’ White House.

The University of Sydney’s US Study Centre organised the event with American students and friends and families making up the bulk of attendance, watching the dramatic election of their new leader on huge screens.

Television cameras from numerous networks turned their attention to the scenes of nervous anticipation and excitement that filled Manning Bar.

American news network CNN cast live broadcast throws to Manning Bar, effectively making it the Australian headquarters for the election watch.

Life-size cut outs of candidates Barack Obama and John McCain were on hand, and special election competitions were held, with a trip to Washington D.C. to watch the inauguration on offer.

Within only hours of first ballots being tallied, Manning Bar had reached capacity with many having to be turned away.

The exhilaration peaked late in the afternoon, when President Elect, Barack Obama gave his victory speech, sparking joyous ovation from the packed house.
