Sydney Uni band takes state honours – 10 October 2008

Young University of Sydney band, Wifey, was crowned the best in New South Wales, after they won the University Band Comp State Final last night at Manning Bar.

In front of around 500 revellers, the five piece outfit beat 10 other bands from universities and TAFEs across NSW, to claim a place in the national final.

Wifey’s folk-rock sound impressed the eight-person judging panel, which included members from top Aussie bands (and past Band Comp entrants) The Vines, 78 Saab, and The Redsunband, several leading music industry representatives and Triple J presenter Vijay Khurana.

The University of Sydney Union hosted the event, which was presented by Jake Stone from currently touring act Bluejuice, who will be back at Manning to play Sounds in the Grounds on 18 October.

Special mention of the night went to The Tracks from the University of Technology Sydney, and The Jacket from the University of Wollongong.

Wifey will now travel to the National Final at the University of Canberra on 23 October.
